While the 356 was a fast, reliable machine, Porsche wanted some more. That something more came in the form of a faster, more comfortable, more sporty car that has become one of the most iconic vehicles of all time: the 911.
The 911 was introduced in 1963 with an air cooled, rear mounted straight six engine. Because of its larger engine and more race car inspired design it was technically not a replacement for the 356 (that was the four cylinder 912), the 911 quickly became the star marque of the Porsche line. And it still is today, with the current 991 series, sporting a water cooled, turbo charged, rear mounted six cylinder power plant (911s have been water cooled since 1998, a point of contention with many Porsche purists).
The recent Volkswagen and Porsche Reunion car show was a wonderful opportunity for many classic cars from this line to be put on display. Here are some of the many fine examples that showed up that day.
